Review: Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

Once upon a time I used to have an actual book review blog but since I just don't have that much time to read anymore I decided to just post my book reviews on my normal blog.  So, here be the first one!

Title: Nevermore
Author: Kelly Creagh
Publisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers
Pages: 543
Available: Now

Cheerleader Isobel Lanley is horrified when she is paired with Varen Nethers for an English project, which is due—so unfair—on the day of the rival game. Cold and aloof, sardonic and sharp-tongued, Varen makes it clear he’d rather not have anything to do with her either. But when Isobel discovers strange writing in his journal, she can’t help but give this enigmatic boy with the piercing eyes another look.

Soon, Isobel finds herself making excuses to be with Varen. Steadily pulled away from her friends and her possessive boyfriend, Isobel ventures deeper and deeper into the dream world Varen has created through the pages of his notebook, a realm where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life.

As her world begins to unravel around her, Isobel discovers that dreams, like words, hold more power than she ever imagined, and that the most frightening realities are those of the mind. Now she must find a way to reach Varen before he is consumed by the shadows of his own nightmares.

His life depends on it.

First off I have to say that it was nice to read something so fresh.  I don't think I've read anything that was even close to Mrs. Creagh's dark tale.  I loved her imagery.  I felt like I was watching a movie at times.  She creates these dark, wonderfully creepy images that left me craving more.

I wasn't sure how I would like a character who was supposed to be a moody goth.  It took me a while to warm up to him and I didn't even realize I was doing so for a while.  But in the end you can't help but swoon for Varen.

I do have to say this though.  It felt like I was reading 2 books almost.  There is hardly any hint of the supernatural in the entire first half of the beginning of the book, aside from a few strange dreams.  It moved along a bit slowly in the beginning (which is quite long considering the book is over 500 pages long).  I'm still left a bit confused after having finished.  I wish things would have been a little more clearly explained.  I think the events that happened would have had a bit more impact had they been.

Overall, a great dark story.  I loved the intensity of the ending and I can't wait for the second book, whenever it may be coming out!

4 out of 5 stars!
