Here it goes again!

I managed to survive my week away from Eden! It was a lot harder than I thought it would be to take time away... lol. Let's just say mom was a bit grumpy this week and had a short fuse... But today I started the part of the writing process that I dread: Editing.

Not a lot was done today. I started out small with something not too overwhelming. Only about the first third of Eden was actually seperated into chapters so that's what I did today, started splitting it all up. For some reason that's hard for me. But at least I've started now. Time to dive head-long in!

I've come up with a plan for the next few months. It usually takes me almost as long to edit as it did to write the first draft. It took me about 3 1/2 months to write the first draft. My goal is to have it all edited by April 16th.  Just under 2 1/1 months.  Why the 16th? Cause there is this really great writers conference I want to go to in Seattle. You can find out all about it HERE. It looks really amazing and I think it could provide some really amazing opportunities.

But anyway, wish me luck! Editing is always the hardest part of the writing process for me!

Taking a deep breath...

Great news! I finished the massive re-write of the first half of Forsaken! It is such a relief to have it done! I have to say, I am SO much happier with the new stuff. I really did hate most of what I had before. It was overwhelming to start all over again with it but I’m so glad I decided to do it. And it was so nice to just copy and paste the last 30,000 words onto all the revisions. Guess I rewrote the first two thirds of it… lol. And it took me just under a month to do all the rewrites. Not too bad.  Now just 2 more rounds of editing and it will be FINISHED!

That being said, my brain is totally exhausted with editing and revisions! I went from not having worked on Forsaken in a few months to rewriting most of it! I think my brain needs a bit of a break from it for a few days. So, I’m going to take a step back from it till, um… Saturday I’m going to say. No, Monday. Jenni and I are having an epic all night writing marathon this Friday that I am so excited for! Hopefully I can get a ton of writing done in Eden! I’ve been itching to get back to it! I even had a fan add it to Goodreads, even though I’m not even done with the first draft. I think over 30 people have already added it to their TBR piles!

Next on my ramble: I’ve been having a LOT of different people asking for friend requests on Facebook. Most of them are book bloggers or something like that, others are just people who have found me. I think I’m going to make a new fan page on Facebook. My current one is too hard to find and it’s just for Branded specifically. I’d like to make one that is just for all my writing. I think that will make things easier and cleaner for me. I think it’s important to keep some separation with personal life and work related stuff (work = writing, couldn’t ask for anything better =) ). I’ll let everyone know when I get the new fan page up and running!

Lastly, the latest review for the Branded Tour! http://booksbytheirstory.blogspot.com/2010/11/branded-by-keary-taylor.html

Just a quick update

I finished editing Branded this morning! Hurray!!!  It felt so good to get it done.  I'm really happy with where it is right now.  I'm kind of surprised that I feel a little nervous to send it out again.  It's bad enough being told "sorry, it's just not quite good enough" once, being told twice hurts a little more.  And I'm all self conscious again about my query letter.  It's got to be okay though since I got 6 requests from it last time I sent it out, that's pretty good.

Anyway, I ended up deciding to go with my revised opening.  I got a lot of split opinions on it but I just feel better about that one.  It's shorter and feels cleaner.  I think it's written better.

Thanks again for all your support you guys!  I love you all!  I will keep you posted on what I hear after I send it out again on Monday!

What do you think?

I've felt like I've been a really weird limbo with my writing the last few weeks.  I finished the 3rd draft of Forsaken.  I've started this new project, Eden.  I've also been working on another round of edits to Branded (again... does it ever end?).  I finally decided to focus on working on Branded again.  I've been going through and fixing awkward sentences and I've also been adding in some short scenes from Jessica (my MC's) past.  I think maybe this is what has been missing that agent's aren't liking.  They need to know her better.

I'm struggling though.  I have two different versions of the opening scene.  They're very similar, just worded a little different.  I know which one I think is better but I've had other people tell me the opposite.  I've asked several people and am getting totally split answers.

So, I need all your help!  Which is better:

Option #1:

When you go 108 hours, four and a half days without sleep, your body starts to do strange things.

Mine was shutting down and panicking at the same time.

My heart pounded despite the fatigue that consumed me. My ears rang so loudly I couldn’t even hear the breeze as it blew through the towering trees that surrounded me. My eyes ached so horribly I wanted to throw up. If I looked in a mirror I knew they would be bloodshot and swollen. I felt delusional and jumped at every shadow that danced on the black lake surface, sure it was a demon come to carry me away.

I was so tired.

Don’t fall asleep.

I paced on the dock, the moon shining brightly above me. I couldn’t fall asleep; I wouldn’t let myself fall asleep. To sleep brought terror no one could understand.

I counted my steps as I paced. Fourteen… fifteen… sixteen… I never lost count despite the fact that I didn’t consciously do it. I couldn’t help it, the numbers just came.

Just a few more hours. That was all I needed. In a few more hours I would be ready to face the terror that came with sleep. I could face the judgments of the angels and those that had no right to be called such. I had made it 108 hours already; I could make it just two or three more.

I couldn’t fight this any longer though. I was going to have to sleep and it was going to have to be now. I had learned better than to fight it this long.

My breathing increased rapidly as I forced myself to walk back toward the deserted house that looked toward the east side of the lake. My head spun and I feared I might pass out right then and there on the cold wooden planks.

Silent walls greeted me as I entered the house. I had been the caretaker for just over a year and a half and not once had the elderly owners come to stay. That was for the best. They would know I was crazy after only a few days.

Panic saturated my system as I stumbled through the door that led to my basement apartment. My eyelids were winning though. My legs protested in fatigue as I staggered into my bedroom. I barely made it to my bed before collapsing.

Option #2:

This was the time of night when panic started to set in.

The white puffs of air that came from my nose and mouth were billowing faster and faster as my breathing sped up. My palms started sweating, but because the temperature hovered just below freezing, it made my fingers all the more frozen. The pounding of my heart raced in the all too familiar way as it threatened to beat out of my chest. But despite all these reactions of panic, my eyelids were growing heavier by the second. My eyes ached and I knew if I were to look in a mirror they would be bloodshot and swollen.

When you go 108 hours, four and a half days without sleep, your body starts to do strange things.

I continued to pace back and forth on the dock, counting under my breath as each step was taken. Seven…eight…nine…ten. It was strange how I never lost count, even if I didn’t exactly choose to do the counting. I couldn’t help it, the numbers just came.

The water was perfectly calm on the lake, an exact duplicate of the full moon reflecting on its surface. With the towering evergreens that surrounded it there was a feeling of being in a gigantic bowl, of being cradled in the arms of Mother Nature. No wind stirred the air, did not ruffle my unruly, curly hair that hung down my back, trailing down the sweater that clung to my shaking shoulders.

Seventeen…eighteen…nineteen. I knew I was losing the battle and in my desperation I started a set of jumping-jacks. Not exactly an easy thing to do when your footing starts to rock back and forth. However, it fulfilled its purpose of waking me up –slightly.

Just a few more hours. That was all I needed. In a few more hours I would be ready to face the terror that came with sleep. I could face the judgments of the angels and those that had no right to be called such. I had made it 108 hours already; I could make it just two or three more.

I wasn’t fool enough to believe that though. All the jumping around on the dock bought me a few more minutes but there was no way I was going to make it even a half hour longer. I could feel the fatigue setting in and I knew I couldn’t fight it any more. My limbs were sluggish and felt heavy. My mind felt muddled and unfocused. My ears were ringing so loudly I could not distinguish any other sounds.

I was going to have to sleep and it was going to have to be now. I had learned better than to fight it for this long.

My breathing increased rapidly as I started the walk from the dock that sprouted off the deck that led back up to the large deserted house that looked toward the east side of the lake. My head spun and I knew that if I did not control my breathing soon I was going to pass out right then and there on the cold wooden planks.

The house was empty as always. I had been the caretaker here for just over a year and a half now and not once had the elderly owners come to visit. This was for the best. Problems I would rather not have to deal with would arise if we were to stay in the house at the same time for too long. Not because of personality clashes, the owners were very nice people. But once they spent the night here they would question my state of mind, my sanity, and I would be forced to leave. Too many people already thought I was crazy.

My heart raced and pounded but my eyelids were winning as I trudged through the basement entrance that led to my apartment. My legs protested in fatigue as I stumbled through the door and across the floor. I barely made it to my bed before collapsing.

Please let me know what you think!  I've only got about 50 pages more to edit!  Then I'll resubmit to the agents who looked at it before.  Plus, I've found about 12 new agents I haven't submitted to!

Thank you all!

Of Writing, Plotting, and Editing

As I've mentioned in my last few posts, I've been working on a new project called Eden.  It's my first scifi/dystopian.  It's been such and interesting experience for me.  I have mixed feelings about it.  While I am excited to work on it and I already love it, I worry that I'm not going to be very good at this genre.  I have only read maybe 4 books in either of these genres as far as I can remember.  When picking books to read I never think to grab anything in this area.  But I talked to a friend who suggested some new stuff for me.  So a few days ago I stopped at the library and grabbed Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, Life as we Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer, and The Children of Men by P.D. James.

The thing with this new book is that even though its this weird subject for me, it's still true to my style because it will involve romance.  I am a sucker for a good love story so of course it has to be involved in my own work.  The thing is, I'm not sure who I want my MC to eventually end up with.  The two choices are very different in every single way.  This is an interesting delima.  I love the one character more as of right now but know she should probably end up with the other one.  I've never had this problem when even I didn't know how it was going to end.

If you're interested, I've started posting Eden as I go along on my website.  So if you're interested check it out on www.kearytaylor.com/eden.  I'd love to hear what you think of it so far.

On another topic, I've stalled on editing Forsaken again.  I've actually been going over Branded again, trying to figure out what is missing from it that is keeping an agent from feeling strong enough about it.  I've had about 6 agents look at it.  All of them have said they like the idea, think it's really unique.  But what a few of them have said is that they just didn't connect with Jessica, my MC, enough.  One of them said that she didn't feel like she really knew Jessica enough at the end.  So I've been thinking about this, trying to decide how to fix this.  I think I've come up with a solution.

Jessica had a really rough time growing up.  She has lived through hell her entire life with no one understanding what was going on and no one to talk to.  So I've decided to add in a few memories of things that have happened to her.  Things from when she was a little girl, her mother's reactions to her, a scene from after she ran away from home, a few things like that.  Hopefully this will give people a little more insight into Jessica, help people understand why she is the way she is.

And ultimately the goal is to contact those agents who liked Branded but eventually decided to pass, and see if they would be willing to take a look again.  And hopefully all you fans out there will help.  It will help my case if I already have a built-in fan base.  So thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you who have been there for me.  Who have given me words of encouragement when I thought about giving up.  And thank you for helping to spread the word.

There Is Still Hope

A little bit of good news.  I finished the read through/paper draft edit of Forsaken this morning!  That's kind of the easy part.  I just cross words out, pick better ones, write "expand" or "clarify" in the margins.  Stuff like that.  But hey, it's a start!  The hard part now is to go back and do all those expansions and clarifications.  It really won't be that bad once this edit is finished, and I'm half way done with it.

I have 3 people who I have emailed Forsaken too.  I haven't heard back from any of them yet but I'm curious to hear what they have to say about it.

So there it is.  A little glimmer of hope.  I'm not going to say that I'm still going to have this finished by the date of September 1st like I had planned on.  I just don't know if it will happen.  But it will be finished.  By the end of the year at the very, VERY latest.

For your pleasure, here's a canto that is at the beginning of Forsaken that sums up the whole book.  It's from Dante's Inferno.

““For such a falling short, and for no crime,
We all are lost, and suffer only this:
Hopeless, we live forever in desire.”
When I heard this, great sorrow seized my heart,
For I saw men of great distinction there
Hovering in Limbo at the edge of Hell.”

The reason for the drag

I've been whining endlessly about how it's been taking me forever to finish Forsaken and have been really frustrated about it.  I haven't been able to figure out why it's been taking me so long till the other day.  I have my natural reasons, ie. kids, the golf course, life.  But probably the biggest reason: I don't have the excitement of pitching and submitting it to agents in hopes to get it published.  Trying to get an agent and then a publisher is a HUGE motivating factor in finishing a book, at least it was for me.  I've never stopped trying to get an agent since I finished Branded back in September but somehow still haven't managed to get one.  But there's no hope in getting one for Forsaken alone, it just doesn't work that way.  It's a series, they go together.  So with no excitement in getting to that point I've been in no rush.  Good and bad some might say but I am not a patient person.  I work better when I put pressure on myself.

Anyway, not that any of this really matters.  I'm going to have it done soon.  I'm working on the 3rd draft now.  I'm hoping to have it done in 3 weeks and then send it off to be edited.

On a little more hopeful note for the future, I typed out a few pages for my new project last night.  It's not much, fewer than 1,000 words but I'm actually really happy with what I have.  This new main character is fun to learn about, it's always so much fun to discover a new person.  I'm debating if I will post the pages I wrote on here or not.  Still undecided if I want to do that.  This is all so new to me, diving into the world of science fiction.  So, keep your eyes open, those pages may make an appearance!

Inspiration

As of right now, I am back editing FORSAKEN.  The time apart has been good but at the same time it takes me a little while to get back into the swing of things when I take a break this long from writing.  But it is underway!  Only just over 2 months till the release!  Not enough time to have it polished you say?  Fear not!  It will be done (as long as my *editors* can commit the time to work on it for me)!

The muses seem to be smiling upon me lately and I've been getting all these new ideas for books I want to write.  The ever constant problem for a writer: TIME.  I currently have 4 projects I want to work on, not to mention finishing Forsaken and the third book in the series (still not decided on a title).  It's kind of funny to me that I get ideas while watching movies.  Guess that shouldn't be too much of a surprise...  Anyway, my latest idea came to me while watching Star Wars III.  I think it would actually classify as a science fiction!  Wow, me?  Write a science fiction?  Hum, we shall see.  I'm really excited about the idea though.  All of my new ideas are headed in the young adult direction, my fourth project is to re-write The Ever Chronicles.

Despite the frustration that it is just not humanly possible for me to work on all these projects right when I want to, I couldn't be happier that I've actually getting ideas again!  I used to write a LOT when I was young, in junior high and in high school.  My best friend and I wrote this epic Harry Potter spin off when were about 15 (it was about 200 pages, pretty good for 15, right?).  I had notebooks full of stories I was working on.  When I got into my senior year of high school for some strange reason I thought I could write song lyrics, even though I couldn't play a musical instrument to save my life.  Basically it was all just poetry, which is kind of funny to me because (don't shoot me!) I kind of can't stand poetry right now.  I just don't get the majority of it.  Anyway, where is this all going you ask?  After I graduated high school I didn't write anymore.  Life got busy being just life and I stopped.  After I had my first child and became a stay at home mom I suddenly had some time to write again.  And boy did I try.  Trying to force something out just doesn't work.  I couldn't think of anything that creative.  I got really frustrated!  I'd never had a problem before.  And then reading a certain book (I won't disclose here for fear of ridicule and teasing...) started churning my creative juices again.  Voila!  I started coming up with the idea for The Ever Chronicles!

I guess where I am going with this is to just say keep your eyes open and don't look at things as they are.  Look at what they could be and how you could change it to be unique.  And if you've got more ideas then you do time, be grateful for it.  It's better than looking at a blank page.

More Editing and a Request For YOUR Opinion

So, despite yesterdays too long post of the editing process I've decided to take a little bit different route. I started working on the next step of edits but it didn't feel right. I decided to go ahead and print the first copy of it. I've been working on a round of revisions for Branded (catching a few typos, working on the typesetting, etc) and I've noticed a lot of things stand out to me that I've never really noticed or thought about before. I've heard that it's good to have some time apart from your work and it's true. So, even though it's not long, I'm taking a week off of Forsaken. I can't really afford to take any more time off than that but a week will have to do. Ideally I would take a month off but the deadline doesn't permit, and honestly I don't think I could take that much time away from it.

So maybe I will work on The Ever Chronicles re-write in the next week. I got the sudden itch today to work on it. I've rekindled my love for William Colegrove! Who knows though, this weekend is going to be really busy so I may just not write at all in the next week! Weird thought... lol

Last item on the blog list today: I've been trying to come up with a title for the third book in the Fall of Angels. I've tossed around a few things but nothing has really struck me like Forsaken did. Here's what I've considered so far:

*Descended
*Relentless
*Retribution

I'm liking Retribution, just thought of that one today, but it's not a adjective like my other titles. So, cast your vote below and let me know what you think! Or if you think of something else let me know in the comments!

What should the title of the third book be?

My Editing Process

I've finally finished the second draft of FORSAKEN, both Jessica and Alex's POV's. It nearly killed me but it's done! Now I have to go back and fill in a few rocky spots in the next draft, then I'll do a quick read through of the whole thing, fix any miss-used words and anything else that stands out to me. Then I'll get a copy of it printed and read through it again. It's weird how your work reads different on the computer than it does in real print. I always catch a lot of different things, find things that I want to change/add in. Once I transfer the edits back to the computer I will send it off to my editors (aka my mom and brilliant sister Ashley). When I get all my mistakes back from them I'll do another transfer, one more read through and call it done! And I'll be totally exhausted and sick of it by that point! LOL THEN, I'll talk to the graphic designer and get the cover done and send it off to the printer. Whew! Lots of work to get done before September 1st! But it will get done! (unless I happen to get signed by an agent or publisher before then, keep your fingers crossed!)

So wow, that ended up much longer than it was supposed to be! Maybe it's a little messy and disorganized but that's my editing process!

Lagging behind

Things seem to be crawling along with the writing. If you've been reading my blog for very long you know I HATE editing. I get so frustrated with it. And now that is the point I am at with Forsaken. I'm really anxious to get on with writing Alex's POV but can't until I finish editing in the things I need with Jessica. Things have been so crazy lately, with the golf course getting ready to open for the season (we own the golf course on our little island), I've been out of town for the last 5 days, and with 2 kids it's REALLY hard to find time to write. And I am SO ready to finish Forsaken. I started working on it clear back in October! It's already been almost 7 months since I started it! It should be done by now! I've never taken so long to finish a book.

I've got to do better. Gotta' get this done!

On another note, I've started another blog. It's just for the books I read and what I think about them. www.contemporaryfantasyreview.blogspot.com if you're interested.

Anyway, there's my ramble for the day!

So in case you haven't seen it on Facebook yet, I've finished the first draft of Forsaken! Yay! It's always such a strange feeling as I'm writing the last few pages of a book. I'm not sure how to explain it. My heart starts beating really fast and I get really excited. But then I start feeling a little sad and a little depressed because I know the editing is coming too. I hate editing, a lot! I've griped about it a lot in my old posts. I'm sure there are plenty on here.

I'm really happy with what I have created with Forsaken. I was getting really frustrated with it in the beginning, not sure how to make it work or put it down how I wanted it to become. But I'm really happy with it. I got to explore and get to know a lot more of my characters. It was really interesting.

Now the plan is to go back what I have written and edit in a lot of stuff that needs to go in now. Hopefully that will only take me 2 or 3 weeks. Once that is done I will go back and do Alex's part of the story. I'm guessing that will take me about a month. I'm not sure. I still have to get into his head so we'll see how long he takes to let me in. :)

Happenings

So it's been a while since I've posted anything about what's been happening with Branded. Sadly there's not too much to tell. All 3 of the agents who requested partials decided to pass for one reason or another. There was only one of those who I was pretty bummed about. I still have about 12 agents I am waiting to hear back from who I sent query letters to. I'm guessing I will only hear back from about half of them, even to get a rejection.

I follow a lot of different literary agents blogs and within 2 days, 2 of them announced they are going to stop taking queries for new writers and one announced she is shutting down completely to look for employment in another field. The writing market is having a heck of a time in this new economy and it seems with so many people loosing their jobs everyone is writing books! JK But seriously, another agent who's blog I follow posts her stats every Friday for how many queries she reads. It's usually around 250 she reads every week and of those she will maybe request a partial/full on 1!!! Those are not good odds, and that's how most all the agents are these days.

So in light of these horrible odds, I've started to look into self publishing options. After looking at several different companies I think I am going to go with Amazon's company, called CreateSpace. It automatically gets you onto Amazon to sell and it costs me no money up front. I can order copies of my own book for around 5 or 6 dollars. The sad thing, and this, from what I've learned, is how it is with most publishers, the royalties are only from about $0.05-$5, depending on where you sell at. With their expanded distribution program, I would only make about $0.61 a book but if someone buys it from my eStore through Amazon, I would make about $5. Good things and bad things.

I think I'm going to get going on this option. If I still get an agent, then great! But it's not looking likely. I still need to have someone else do a good solid edit for me, get a cover designed (and find someone to do that for me), and figure out how to buy an IBSN number. Hopefully I'll be ready to get this thing going in about a month or so.

Also, I am debating if I want to make a good push to try and get to the editors desk on www.Authonomy.com. This is a website for new authors to post their finished and works in progress. The problem with it is in order to get people to comment on and back your book, you have to put in a LOT of time doing the same thing. With my not having the Internet at home, and having 2 very little kids, this is a little hard to do. It's kind of political and a bit frustrating. But I do get really good comments and feedback. HarperCollins, who puts the site on, takes the top 5 books every month and their editors review them, giving feedback and such. On their blog that I read they also tend to pick about one of those books a month to publish. Still, not good odds there since there are several thousand books on it but I have a bit more control over it. I just don't know if I have the time to commit to it.

I am slowly working on the second book to Branded. I'm just over 10,000 words into it (Branded is 94,000). I'm still trying to figure out a title for it but I think I'm going to have to wait till I'm a little further into it. But I'm happy with what I have written so far and the plotting, though what I have written is in dire need of a lot of editing. I probably won't do any of that though till the book is done. That's what I did with Branded and I think I prefer doing it that way.

Anyway, this turned out much longer than I intended it to be but that is what is going on with the writing now.

We're almost there!

I finished the first edit of Branded today! Yay! So now I just have to read through it one more time, checking for spelling and punctuation and anything else that doesn't sound right. I've gotten a rough draft of my query letter done and now I have to work on the synopsis which I HATE! Hopefully I'll be ready to send it out to agents a week from now!! YAY!

Anxious

I am so ready to be DONE with Branded! I have to say, I hate editing! I know it's necessary but it would be really nice to just write the first draft and be done! haha I'm about half way done with my first edit and my deadline for myself to have it finished is September 16th. I'm pretty sure I can do that but it's sometimes hard to motivate myself to sit down and do it.

I also started on my query letter and I'm fairly pleased with what I have so far. I think I am going to ask my writing group I go to once a month to take a look at it and tell me what they think. I am starting to get excited again about submitting to agents (and all the rejections I'll get, haha). Anyway, back to work!

SO.....

I finished the first draft of Branded yesterday!!!!! That was pretty much all I did yesterday until about 4. I normally shoot for about 1400 words a day and ended up writing 6500 yesterday! My brain was pretty fried after I was done but I was SOOO happy to have it done. It ended up just barely under 90,000 words, roughly a 350 page book. It will probably get a little bit longer once I've edited it. So, today I'm going to get it printed so I can start the editing! So excited!!!

Random Rambelings

I've got about 35 more pages to edit and then I'll transfer it all to the computer. I've only done about 20 pages or so of transfer edit but that part goes pretty fast so I'm hoping it will only take me a few days to do that. I didn't get as many responses back from people who requested to read my book as I thought but I didn't really expect to. Everyone seemed to really like it so that gives me a little hope that perhaps an agent might like it. Although in a way I am still looking forward to my first rejection :). Just to have proof that I'm actually trying to get it out there.

I sent my query to the Query Shark blog so I'm really hoping that she'll critique it for me. Keep your fingers crossed! I know I'll get some great feedback, even if it's not so positive towards my writing.

I have just been thinking today how grateful I am that I finally got back into writing. I have always loved writing. When I was in fifth grade we were asked to write a two page fictional story on slavery and mine ended up being ten. I absolutely loved it! And for a long time I wrote poetry after that. I don't know if it was really any good but all my family seemed very impressed by it. When I was in eighth grade my creative writing teacher read a poem I wrote and asked me to read in front of the entire class he liked it so much! I think he entered it into a contest for me but I don't remember what exactly happened with that. That same year, my best friend and I wrote a "fanfiction" I believe is what it is called of Harry Potter. We worked on that till our sophomore year and finally finished it. I wish I could remember how long it ended up being but it was quite the book for a couple of 14 year olds! I was always so proud that we accomplished that.

My junior year I took the "drop-out Honors English" class cause I didn't like the teacher who taught honors. I had the privilege to have Sam Beeson as my teacher. One assignment he gave us was to write a short scary story. I didn't think I'd be any good at this but he seemed quite impressed. He encouraged everyone to enter the city Halloween short story contest despite the fact that he had won the whole thing for the last 3 or 4 years. He told me however that he thought there was a good chance I would beat him. I wanted to enter very badly but because there was an entry fee I couldn't do it. I was basically providing for myself at that point and even $10 was precious to me and could not be spent on anything that was not necessary.

For some reason after this year I did not write much save a few "song" lyrics. I guess life just got too busy. After I graduated I started working full time and then in the fall added a full time college schedule to the mix. To add to the craziness further I got engaged and had a wedding to plan. And life just kept being crazy. I hardly even read anymore, another great love of mine. After the birth of my daughter though, things finally settled a bit. We moved to Washington state to an island where the pace of life is quite slow and laid back. I became a full time stay at home mom. The setting was perfect to start writing again. It took me a while but eventually the story for The Ever Chronicles came about and I was writing again.

I am so grateful that I am writing again. It makes me so happy and helps me feel that I accomplished something. Don't get me wrong, my role as a wife and mother gives me this as well, but writing is something that is just for me. It is very personal.

It is strange, the drive to write. I don't think I can stop now. I think it would almost literally hurt me to stop. It has become a part of who I am far more than it ever was before. I heard a quote once, I can't remember by who, but it was something to the effect of: "why do I write? Because I would die if I didn't." Something like that. I didn't understand it at the time and it seemed very silly but I really understand it now. Something powerful and pivotal within me would die if I were to stop. And so I won't.

The drive I feel to do something with this thing I have created is powerful. Now that the thought of being published, to be recognized as a writer has been planted in my head I want it bad. Bad. I am going to work as hard and as long as necessary to obtain the thing I want.

New Covers

Not that it matters one little bit but I redesigned the covers of the first and second book. Let me know what you think!
Also, I've still been working on editing. I am SO ready to have all of this part of the process done! I'm tired of it and I am wanting to move on to the second book (I'm also trying really hard not to start another project I had a great idea for!).
I've been getting some really good feedback on my book so far. The only negative is that there are quite a few spelling and grammacal errors. Other than that everyone has seemed to really love (or at least really like) Ever Burning.
Thanks to everyone for their support! Hopefully we'll see this in print soon!

Getting it out there and some feedback!

So I posted a listing on a few classifieds online asking if anyone would be willing to read my book and critique it for me and to my absolute shock I have already had about 20 replies! Wow! Never would have guessed I would have gotten such a massive response (hopefully that means I wrote a good pitch to sell it to them!). I've gotten one person who has finished it already and said that she really liked it (Thanks Kim!). Woo hoo! I've gotten some hard copies printed out and will distribute them to people who want them. I'm hoping people will not take too long to read it though as I really want to move along with this project. But I am just very glad that people are willing to read it! Anyways, so excited right now! Things are doing good so far!

Changes

So I changed the ending of Ever Burning. It's not earth shattering different or anything. I just took the information that was the old ending and will make that into the first of the second book, Ever Night. I still have a lot of cleaning up to do with this new end but I think that this will make it better. Haven't gotten any response from the people who I emailed the story too but I'm not going to get too worried yet as we just got Christmas over with. I am so ready to move on with this whole process and can't wait to start getting rejected by agents (or hopefully accepted!)... haha
